  5. movement of water leaches nutrients from the
  6. upper layers, making podzols poor
  7. agricultural soils. The leaching of minerals
  8. such as iron, lime and alumina leads to the
  9. formation of a bleached zone, often also
  10. depleted of clay. These minerals can
  11. accumulate lower down the soil profile to
  12. form a hard, impermeable layer which
  13. restricts the drainage of water through the
  14. soil.
